Ceiling Design at Dream Home 10 - The Seaside Sanctuary
CEILINGS DESERVE THEIR MAIN CHARACTER MOMENT - HERE'S WHY!
Pinterest and Instagram are dangerous when you’re building a new home—one minute, you’re feeling inspired, and the next, you’re drowning in a sea of too many choices. No wonder so many people feel overwhelmed, second-guessing every selection! Over the years, we’ve picked up a few game-changing tricks to keep our selections on track. Step one? Lock in your home’s style—just like we did with Dream Home 10, where we landed on a Coastal Mediterranean vibe. Step two? Identify the must-have design features that bring that style to life—the kind that, without them, the look just wouldn’t be the same. For Dream Home 10, it was all about classic coastal meets Mediterranean villa, and one feature kept appearing in our inspo pics: VJ panelling and exposed beams. Ceiling design is often overlooked, but trust us—it can (and should!) be the star of the show.
GO BIG OR GO HOME: THE VJ PANELING TRICK THAT TRANSFORMS A ROOM
For the VJ paneling, we landed on Intrim’s VJ Board Pro 150. Fun fact: Did you know VJ stands for vertical joint? Intrim VJ Pro Board comes in two profiles—150mm and 100mm—meaning the vertical grooves are spaced accordingly. Since our main living and dining areas are large open spaces with soaring 3m ceilings (same as the bedrooms), we opted for the wider 150mm profile to enhance the sense of scale. The smaller profile would have made the rooms feel more enclosed.
When it comes to ceiling design ideas, sometimes bigger really is better! These aren’t individual 150mm-wide boards that have to be installed one by one. They come in large sheets (up to 1200mm x 3600mm), making installation quicker and easier. This was a game-changer for our ceiling design, as it allowed us to achieve a high-end, custom look with minimal effort. Plus, they’re installed in place of plasterboard and are paint-ready—no extra prep work needed!

BEAM ME UP! THE SECRET TO LUXE CEILING DESIGN
(WITHOUT THE HEFTY PRICE TAG)
We wanted to take our ceiling design to the next level with Intrim’s non-structural decorative beam wraps. Inspired by Mediterranean farmhouse villas and classic coastal cottages, these beams added depth and character—completing our vision beyond just VJ panelling. But here’s the best part: if your ceiling doesn’t have exposed rafters, you can fake it with a ceiling beam design that looks the part without the hefty price tag.
Since our ceilings are 3m high, we knew we could go bold with chunky beams without making the rooms feel smaller. Intrim’s decorative beams gave us an affordable alternative to solid timber, as they’re crafted from Vic Ash and built as a lightweight, three-sided box rather than a heavy structural beam.
That means:
– Lower cost
– Easier installation
– A hollow interior to discreetly hide wiring for lighting or speakers
At Dream Home 10, we customized our beam spacing between 900mm and 1100mm to create the perfect balance in each space. And in the bedrooms? We got clever—using the beams as a stylish pelmet to conceal curtain tracks and motorized blinds. Functional and fabulous!
CURVES AHEAD! SOFTENING THE EDGES WITH STUNNING DESIGN FEATURES
Another signature element of Mediterranean design is the use of curves and arches. While we decided not to go for full-blown arches in Dream Home 10, we couldn’t resist sneaking in some gorgeous curved features, like our curved fireplace and rangehood in the kitchen. Curves are a fantastic way to break up the harsh, straight lines often found in new builds, adding softness and flow to the space. For our curved fireplace, we had to find the perfect architrave to ensure it blended seamlessly with the main walls. We opted for Intrim’s SK51 profile skirting boards (150mm high), and lucky for us, Intrim also offers a polyurethane version of the same profile. Polyurethane is super flexible, making it the perfect material to shape around those lovely curved walls. Happy days indeed!
