Struggling to visualise how your new home will look once it’s built?
If you’re about to kick start a new home build and wondering where the heck to start when designing, then this is for you.
It’s been 14 years since we started designing new homes, now we’ve got 20 new builds under our belt. We know just how much your new home vision board is the key to success.
ROADMAP
Research the right route
Picture this: you get in your car, turn it on and head out the driveway BUT you have NO destination, NO map and NO idea whether to turn left or right!
Expecting to walk into your new home once it’s built and jump for joy but without a new home vision board is much the same. You need to help yourself by doing the research before going down any new home build journey.
We often hear people say they want to create a cohesively designed home, so buckle up we’re going to show you just how to do it with a new home vision board. You’ll be heading to the right destination in no time!
LOCATION! LOCATION!
See what’s around
We’ve all heard the good old real estate saying “Location! Location!” Well when it comes time to start searching for dream home inspiration, looking around you is a great place to start.
Every time we start a new home vision board, we look at the homes and location around us (even if we’re building in a new housing estate).
You don’t have to choose a coastal style home just because you live by the beach but it will be a great place to start when you start typing in that Pinterest search bar.
You might decide to mix coastal with another style you love!
Coastal Farmhouse anyone?!
That’s what we did at Dream Home 7. We love coastal style but we wanted to blend it with the farmhouse style because of its rural location.
STYLE SEARCHING
If you’re not sure what style suits your location or what style you love then let us help you. We have created a Pinterest Board called ‘Styles We Love’ go check it out, it will help you know what style or styles you love and what might suit your location best.
You may like more than one style and that’s okay with us! We just recommend sticking to 2 or 3 styles on your new home vision board. We dig a lot deeper into this in our new course Selections Made Simple.
NARROW DOWN
‘Home’ in on your style
We recommend no more than 8 images on your new home vision board, you don’t want it looking cluttered and confusing you. Getting it to the point you love it does take time, be prepared to add, move and remove on repeat until you’re happy with it. Just like we did at Dream Home 8 –
HOT TIP
Take a break!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the images you have saved and not sure what to keep in your vision board. Stop! Have a break and come back to it with fresh eyes in a couple of days. You’ll thank us later.

DITCH THE DOUBTS
Especially during construction
If you’ve ever had a chat with someone in the construction phase of a new home build you may have heard them say –
“I’m worried I have made a mistake and it won’t look right”
Maybe they’re in the construction phase now. Ask them if they created a new home vision board? It’s a game changer. We still doubt ourselves from time to time and the very first thing we do when doubt rears its ugly head is head straight to our vision board for instant peace and reassurance.
