Window coverings on a budget

HOW WE SAVED TO SPLURGE FOR DREAM HOME 5

For Dream Home 5 we selected three different window coverings throughout the home. Why? Because like most people we always have a budget to stick to and using a variety of window coverings throughout the home helped us stick to our budget

Thanks to the help from our good friends at Home Blinds Australia we were able to choose the right window coverings for the different uses and lighting conditions in each room. Given our style was Modern Aussie Resort we opted for block-out roller blinds, sheer roller blinds and sheer curtains which fit perfectly within our budget and style.

WHERE WE SAVED

Throughout the home, we primarily used the block-out blinds, they are an all-round popular and affordable option. In most cases, full block-out roller blinds are the way to go for bedrooms to ensure a good night’s sleep and hide the neighbour’s fence. If you do prefer a little added privacy throughout the day, consider adding a dual roller including a sheer roller blind as well. Sheer will give you the privacy you require in the day and provide the desired block-out at night when coupled with the block-out roller blind. We did this in Chloe’s room for Dream Home 5 as it was the only bedroom facing the street.

DON’T HIDE THE VIEW

Not every window in your home or office needs to have a window covering. In Dream Home 5 we opted to have large picture windows to give us a spectacular view of the beautiful surroundings whilst also letting an array of natural light into the home. We opted to not use blinds for our picture windows along the hallway or on the alfresco sliding doors.

TIP

To achieve a clean modern look, install your roller blinds ‘reverse roll’. This hides the roll of the blind so that when the blind is down all you see is the full blind and not the roll of the blind at the top.

WHERE WE SPLURGED

Saving in the bedrooms allowed us to splurge in the master bedroom and the main living areas to take in those stunning pool and mountain views. We couldn’t resist Home Blind Australia’s ‘Soft Sheer Curtains’. They bring both a sense of softness and luxury to the rooms and allowed all that glorious north sunlight to stream in the house all day long. To keep the look modern and minimal, we added a drop ceiling to hide the fixtures of the sheer curtains so all you see is a full wall of soft luxurious sheers. When ordering sheers though, please keep in mind that they continue to drop for approximately the first six months. For this reason, it is suggested you order your sheers one to three centimetres from the ground.

GO MOTORISED

A handy feature we added to our master bedroom and the main living area was a motor to the roller blinds. These windows are extremely large and the weight in pulling them up manually can be quite heavy and laborious. Plus, how convenient is it to just click a button and have four blinds go up at once. We also have the options to individually select one blind to go up or down at a time.
