Have you ever thought about what a home would be like with no doors? Imagine waking up to your kids barging into your bedroom because, well, there’s no door to stop them. Or trying to have a private moment in the bathroom (yikes!). Awkward, right?! Since every home needs doors, they shouldn’t be an afterthought when designing your dream home. In fact, door design is a golden opportunity to bring your signature style to life while keeping things functional.
When designing Dream Home 10, we put serious thought into choosing the perfect doors to complement our coastal Mediterranean style—without sacrificing practicality. From luxe louvred doors to clever ways to mix and match, we’re sharing all the tips and tricks to help you nail your door design.

OPEN THE DOOR TO STYLE & FUNCTIONALITY
We always tell people to lock in their dream home style before choosing colours and materials, and the same goes for doors. They’re not just a way to move between rooms—they set the tone for your entire space. If you’re feeling stuck, we’ve put together a heap of style boards on Pinterest to help you get inspired. Find your style, create a vision board, and let’s talk about how the right doors can take your home to the next level.
Speaking of dream homes, let’s talk about my long-time love affair with louvred doors. I’ve been swooning over them for years, so when I landed on a coastal Mediterranean style for Dream Home 10—aka The Seaside Sanctuary—I knew this was my moment. I wanted the home to feel like a luxurious Mediterranean villa, right here in Australia, and Parkwood Doors delivered exactly what I needed.
ELEVATING YOUR SPACE - LITERALLY
With soaring 3-metre ceilings throughout Dream Home 10, standard door heights just weren’t going to cut it. We took things up a notch (literally!) by increasing our door height to 3420mm, ensuring they felt in proportion with the rest of the home. Trust me, getting this right makes a huge difference—anything shorter would have looked off.
Parkwood’s stunning louvred doors come in both open and closed louvre designs. Since these were being used for bedrooms and bathrooms, privacy and soundproofing were top priorities, so we went with the closed option. But if you’re considering wardrobe doors, open louvres are a great way to boost airflow while keeping things stylish.

SHOULD ALL DOORS MATCH?
Ahh, the age-old dilemma. In most of our builds, we stick with the same internal doors throughout, adding the occasional feature door for impact—like a grand master bedroom entry or a light-filled hallway moment. But for Dream Home 10, we pushed the boundaries.
Since we were creating a boutique hotel experience, each bedroom needed that wow factor the moment guests arrived at their bedroom door. Our cedar louvred doors were a splurge, but they set the tone perfectly. To balance the budget, we used the same profile in a paint-quality pine for secondary doors and painted them in Taubmans ‘Cotton Sheets’ to blend seamlessly with the walls.
For a luxe touch, we also used barn doors in the larger bathrooms. When guests book a high-end holiday home, they want something a little extra—so we leaned into those special design moments to make their stay unforgettable.
TOP TIPS FOR GREAT DOOR DESIGN
Great door design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about making sure your doors work for your space. Here’s how to get it right:
Match door height to ceiling height
If you have different ceiling heights across floors (e.g., a double-storey home), your doors should reflect that. Taller doors downstairs, standard height upstairs—it’s all about proportion.
Think beyond the standard
A feature door (or two) can elevate your home’s design, whether it’s an oversized entry door, an arched beauty, or a set of luxe barn doors.
Consider functionality
Louvred doors? Great for airflow in wardrobes. Solid doors? A must for privacy in bedrooms and bathrooms.
Stick to your style
Your doors should complement your home’s overall aesthetic. Coastal, contemporary, classic—whatever your vibe, make sure your doors are on board (pun intended!).
