BRIGHT IDEAS – HOW TO MAKE A BATHROOM LIGHTER AND BRIGHTER

Snooze the alarm: did you know our bodies naturally crave sunlight when we wake up? Not only is natural light beneficial to our wellbeing, productivity and health, it also transforms your interior space, faster than the speed of… 🙂

There is no denying we love an open plan design. Give us more natural light any day! It’s what instantly makes a home feel warmer and cosier. There is one exception to an open plan home: the bathroom.

Obviously, this room needs a bit more privacy, but that doesn’t mean closed off, dull and gloomy. We can always look at ways of maximising natural light, so you have enough brightness to keep you energized throughout the day (and never have to get ready in the dark, ever).

Keep reading to pick up our tricks to help you design your bright, beautiful new bathroom.

 Let’s let more light in!

1. GO BIG WITH WINDOWS

LOOK OUT! LIGHT’S FLOODING IN.

One of the key considerations for a light-filled bathroom is the size of the windows. It’s literally the difference between a cold and dreary space you want to quickly get in and out of, and a dreamy day spa you want to spend all day in.

We always recommend going the full width of the room, or floor to ceiling windows depending on the floor plan. you can position them high for privacy, or use frosted glass which still lets natural light pass through.

Or, if you’re able – nothing beats a skylight. Fit one over your shower so you can bathe in the morning sun! Oh bliss.

2. ADD LARGE MIRRORS

REFLECTING YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY, AND NATURE’S BEAUTIFUL SUNLIGHT

If there’s one update you can easily do in a day; it’s installing a large mirror.

Mirrors help bounce light around the room, making a space feel lighter and brighter. If you position your mirror in coordination with a window or skylight, this can further enhance the brightness of your space overall.

If in doubt, “the bigger the mirror, the better” is our mantra.

3. WOW WITH WHITE

A BLANK CANVAS THAT BOUNCES LIGHT

This might sound obvious but we’re saying it anyways – stick with light tiles on the walls and floors!

If your objective is light, bright and airy, white is your best friend.

We tend to choose white paint for the walls. It could even be gloss or sheen to add another reflective element to the bathroom. For the floor, we opt for light tones as it stays looking cleaner for longer.

Mirrors aren’t the only things that can reflect. Glossy tiling is great for bouncing more light around.

4. LIGHT IT UP

SHINING LIGHT IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES

It’s not as simple as just installing a light bulb! Focus on your lighting fixtures and pay particular attention to areas where natural light from the windows doesn’t quite reach. Think awkward corners or alcoves.

Ambient lighting is great for filling in these gaps. Downlights are a common and effective option, especially if you’re planning to spend lots of time bathing and relaxing. If you’re after a more creative alternative, opt for pendant lights, wall lights and chandeliers.

If there’s a feature in the bathroom you want to accentuate, like a beautiful bathtub or fancy mirror, accent lighting can be purposefully placed to highlight these.

5. COSY IT UP

Finally, the last way to add brightness and warmth to the bathroom is by adding soft elements to break up all the cold hard surfaces.

We tend to gravitate towards soft luxurious towels, a plant or a decorative vase. We always end up adding a timber element such as a stool or bath tray. Not only are they super practical to place the essentials on whilst you’re having a bath (ours is home to a glass of wine, bar of chocolate and a good book……a girl can dream right 😝) but the timber element adds natural warmth and organic texture as well.
