How to choose art that packs a punch

The spaces we create are a reflection of ourselves. Designing a space that truly captures ‘you’ can be a struggle and somewhat overwhelming. There are a myriad of choices, styles, sizes and colours, and it’s a challenge to even know where to begin. We’ve been choosing pieces for our homes for a long while and if we must say, have the selection down to a fine art. Let us take you through how to choose art for your home.

MOOD BOARDS GET YOU OFF TO A FLYING ART

Whether planning a new home or redesigning an existing one, we always begin with a mood board for each space. Implementing this has changed our lives, prevented us from making a multitude of poor decisions and saved us those all-important dollars. Essentially a mood board is a visual collage of your vision for a room. It allows you to explore different ideas in one place. It keeps your plans focused, guides your decisions and ensures all your ideas come together harmoniously. This step is vital and after you see the impact of your first board, you won’t go back.

WHAT TO INCLUDE ON YOUR BOARD

Mood boards can include all different elements, from swatches to visuals, words and even samples. At Oak and Orange, our mood boards consist of all the key factors that we plan on including in a room, from furniture to wall colours, flooring, materials, rugs, cushions, throws and even the art we plan on using to adorn our walls. We personally find this process drastically helps us narrow down the styles, colour and mood of the room and keep us from buying things we don’t actually need.

ENVISION YOUR DREAM HOME

Start the journey by picturing your dream home. Consider the look and feel you’d like to communicate and start creating either tangibly or digitally. By adding each item to your mood board, you’ll begin to clearly see what works and what doesn’t. You’ll also quickly be able to determine which artwork will suit all the elements you’ve carefully selected for your room and get a firm idea of what size and proportions you’ll require for the space it’s embellishing. See our blog ‘4 top tips for choosing art like a pro’ for our insider secrets on selecting the perfect piece of art for your home or office.

CHOOSING ART FOR DREAM HOME 5

In Dream Home 5, we had a large blank brick wall in the wine cellar to fill. This wall screamed for artwork. Visually, this wall has impact – it is the first wall you see as you walk down the stairs to enter the room. The artwork we chose certainly packed a punch and set the tone for the entire room. At least we think so!

NAIL THE VIBE

From the very beginning we had a vision for this space. It had to have a sophisticated street vibe that evoked funky yet classy. We wanted anyone that entered the room to feel like they’d stepped into a cool, trendy bar and for us, provide an instant escape located in our very own home. And…it couldn’t have been more perfectly timed with last years’ pandemic. Not a bad place to spend isolation if I must say so myself.

FIND THE PERFECT SUPPLIER

After shopping around and doing our research, we knew artwork ‘LA Dreams’ by Tim Mars from Lumas Art was the perfect piece. It was fun, playful, funky and definitely added personality to an otherwise sophisticated, grownup room.

SELECTING THE RIGHT SIZE

When it came to selecting the size of the art for the room, there was one factor we knew we couldn’t downplay and that was the size. It had to be BIG! And it was…1m wide x 1.5m high to be exact.  The wall it was embellishing is large and we only wanted one piece to be hung across the entire space. It needed to have that wow factor and going large was the sure way to achieve that. What do you think?
